active  Topic # 1369  BIRD: Don't forget to check the Backup box

I learned this lesson the hard way. I dropped my T3 on its head one too many times and killed the screen. I bought a used one to replace it, thanked myself for HotSyncing often, and restored my data onto my new unit.

I was happy until I recompiled my first iziBasic app that uses a resource file. The resource file was gone. It didn't take much exploration for me to realize I had not checked the "Backup" box when I created them.

The good news was that I was able to recreate all of my other rsrc files using the resources located in the compiled programs. The bad news is that the one I had to rebuild from scratch had lots of bitmaps I had to recreate.

So, don't forget to check the "Backup" box. Aldweb, perhaps you could add a friendly reminder to the resource tutorial written by Mike Featherstone for the iziBasic user manual? At the end Step 1 would be a good spot.

Salutations a tous,
Lou

Hello Lou,

MAybe give a look here, at my SysInfo shareware page.
It has a function to make sure that all files are backed up during HotSync.

Then, you'd better use an onboard backup system and not only rely on HotSync which is not a good backup software as you discovered it with this bad experience!
Then, you might want to give a look to this discussion thread on this web site (thread written in French but you will easily make your way to the backup applications and their URLs).

Cheers,
aldweb

Merci Aldweb

Comme tu sais, ecrire le francais ne me gene pas. Still prefer English, though. I'm going to try both SysInfo and Backup Man this week, probably buy both. A wise man once told me good work deserves payment is such retribution is requested.

The man is not so wise...
Once was yesterday...
I am trapped!

Please don't buy SysInfo. If you like it, let's make a gentleman's agreement and proceed to an exchange of our software's full versions.

I could survive with the free backup software so far but BackupMan is, according to me, really outstanding.

Cheers,
aldweb
