actif  Sujet n° 1366  ACCESS Linux Platform (ALP)

I was just wondering. How do you think the new ACCESS Linux Platform (ALP) for Palm OS will affect developers who use Izibasic as a primary developmental tool?

p.s. Sorry for such a general question.

Hello Nevin,

So far my understanding of the ALP is the following:
1. Linux is only a kernel and it will replace the current kernel of Palm
2. The Palm OS APIs will remain unchanged
So, in theory, there should be no big trouble.
3. The change of kernel appears to me to be less of change than a change of platform (like from DragonBall to ARM between Palm OS 1-4, to Palm OS 5) and PalmSource has proven to be very aware of their developers with the PACE emulator of DragonBall included in Palm OS 5.

Now, in practice, I am not sure at all:
1. that hardware manufacturers will want to switch to this new platform: they already got sticked to Palm OS 5 and never moved to Palm OS 6. By the way, if they don't, I see a very dark future for Palm OS...
2. of the level of adaptation that iziBasic and its own compiler (PP) will require to run smoothly on the ALP. Apart from a press anouncement, I don't think that some information has already been dispatched to developers. And I remember that most of my applications required only a few adaptations to run fine under Palm OS 5 when they had been designed for Palm OS 3.

These are my early thoughts...

Cheers,
aldweb

Sorry For being so Quiet, but I was out of town for a Whole Month... To be honest I believe that the ALP Will include a version of PACE. If this is true then I believe iziBasic and most other native PalmOS Applications will run on it with Little or No Modifications. I guess we will have to see what happends when it is Available.

I must admit, that I am a little concerned about this new move toward Linux. Even though I think the next Palm OS version will be much better equipt (especially for multi-tasking) I am concerned as to which hardware companies will support it. Recently I have seen Sony drop the Palm OS, Tapwave fold and Palm start to develop windows mobile smartphones. This is already after Cobalt was basically rejected by the marketplace. Do you think Palm OS will survive this transition? Would you consider an iziBasic for windows mobile if it does not?

p.s. I hope this is not the end of the Palm OS.

Apple did...

Would you consider an iziBasic for windows mobile if it does not?
No. This is my answer, even though I have been asked many times by Pocket PC users to port iziBasic to their platform and devices...
iziBasic interacts too much with the OS to easily migrate it to another platform. iziBasic was made to run on and to be optimized to do so with Palm OS only, this was my initial choice.
Furthermore, Palm OS programming is fun, doing the same on the Windows platform is less of a pleasure to me.

Cheers,

I agree, I wish Bill Gates did not have to have his hand in everything...

If (when) Gates wins the handheld war, we'll have Visual Basic for Pocket PC or whatever other MS OS is used. Already exists for all I know, I never used one.

Lou,

I doubt we will ever get an onboard VB for Pocket PC.

If you ever wish to download and install the Microsoft development tools for PDAs, get ready for hundreds of megabytes to download... and don't expect to only install a simulator... so better dedicate a PC to this purpose...

On the other side, iziBasic is only 207 kilo bytes, it does just about the same as VB with an easier syntax (well, I have to admit that I am very pretentious!) and there is no need for a simulator since it runs directly in real devices

Cheers,
